Research and development expenditures at universities in Michigan were sixth in the nation in 2016, and were higher than all of the “Top Ten” states except Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. Michigan universities’ research and development expenditures were greater than those of all of its peers except Massachusetts and North Carolina.
