Michigan’s state and local government spending was 20 percent lower than the “Top Ten” average in 2014, and six percent lower than the average of peer states.

What It Is: Total state and local government expenditures (2015 dollars) divided by population.

Why It Matters: State and local government expenditures are made in important areas such as education, infrastructure, and public safety. However, high government expenditures may mean less private sector economic activity by redirecting dollars and employees for  public sector use.
