Michigan ranked 27th in 2016 in terms of net new business establishments—a significant improvement from 2007 when the state ranked last in the nation. However, Michigan’s new establishment rate still falls far below the “Top Ten” and peer state averages.

What It Is: The number of new businesses opened during the year less the number of businesses closed.

Why It Matters: Independent of employment, new business creation can provide economic growth, a more stable economic foundation, and a more diverse economy.
