Michigan ranked 20th in 2015 in terms of net new business establishments—a significant improvement from 2010 when the state ranked 48th. However, Michigan’s new establishment rate still falls far below the “Top Ten”  and peer state averages.

What It Is: The number of new businesses opened during the year less the number of businesses which closed.

Why It Matters: Independent of employment, new business creation can provide economic growth, a more stable economic foundation, and a more diverse economy.
