After six years of decreasing establishments, Michigan saw very small growth in 2012 and 2013.  Business creation has grown rapidly the past year, at nearly 15 times the rate of the prior year. However, Michigan’s new establishment rate still falls far below the “Top Ten” and peer state averages.

What It Is: The number of new businesses opened during the year less the number of businesses which closed.

Why It Matters: Independent of employment, new business creation can provide economic growth, a more stable economic foundation, and a more diverse economy.
