Michigan’s average ranking across three major business climate indices improved by five spots from 2014 to 2015, but still remained in the bottom 20 states. Michigan’s average ranking was above all peer states except Alabama, Illinois, and California.

What It Is: Average of three major business climate indices that account for several factors such as business costs, business leaders’ perceptions, regulatory climate, quality of life, etc. (1 = best, 50 = worst).     

Why It Matters: This measure is an indicator for how attractive a state might be for businesses.
